SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Town of Surf City Emergency Management and Maintenance crews have completed a visual impact assessment following Hurricane Erin’s offshore pass.

Officials say that all public beach access crossovers are open and remain undamaged.

They say the beach and dune system performed very well. And that only minor erosion occurred, resulting in slight sloping along the portions of the beach, was observed.

Minor overwash was also identified at two locations along North Shore Drive (1500 and 1800 blocks).

In general, impacts were minimal, and no significant concerns have been identified at this time. Despite limited impacts to the beach itself, hazardous ocean conditions remain in effect.

Surf City Fire Chief Allen Wilson says, “Dangerous rip currents continue along the Surf City shoreline, and red flag warnings are in place. Swimming is strongly discouraged until conditions improve. Residents and visitors are urged to heed all posted safety advisories and exercise caution when near the water.”
